lyrics

Ever since Deek was young he couldn't stay calm
Unstable as petroleum
He just wouldn't be told
When anyone bold was expounding the way that it was
He wouldn't pretend that he knew any better
But he'd never accept you were right
His vision would cloud
While his blood rushed around
Fumes blur the air wait for a spark to ignite

Deek's hair was as red as the mist that descended
To colour his clear hazel eyes
He would lose his head and he'd lead with his fists
Do more damage than he realised

Deek survived until '75 when he realised the Texans had arrived
In the city he called home built from the shining stone
Unique in the Universe
The stone was the resource they hewed from the ground
Now they learned to look under the sea
Like Prometheus unbound
They saw what they'd found
Began the black gold rush to pipe it to you and me

The gold was black but the notes they were green
As the eyes of those who found none
Could Deek keep his head while incomers bled the wells
Bragging how it was done?

If you'd have asked Deek
He didn't believe in the fate that his fight couldn't beat
And a man wearing boots for marshalling cows holding court
Was a challenge to meet
Now, I'm no believer in retribution
That comes from somewhere in the sky
But Deek's kind of anger: indiscriminate
Must come at some kind of price

The blood that was red as it spattered the slabs
Looked black in the silvery light
But Deek wasn't present to notice the hue
Hazel eyes burned without sight

For a man who boiled over, could not keep his head
Deek was subject to great irony
Working the boats that went to the rigs
Joined his Silver City's maritime history
He would be solid and steady as she goes
As the gale yoyo-ed them on a wave
But back on dry land
A cable snapped with a twang
Sang like a scythe
Left the silence of the grave

He survived the anchors flying on the deck
The water and waves from the bow
Now his body haunts the old Shiprow
While his head spins along as it rolls
His eyes were widely surprised
Well, it's not as if he could've known
That his body would haunt the old Shiprow
While his head spins along as it rolls...
